What is DNS filtering, and why does your business need it?

DNS filtering is one of the cheapest, most effective security controls you can add — it blocks phishing, malware and risky sites before they ever load. Here’s how it works.

Most cyber attacks don’t start with a clever hacker breaking through a firewall. They start with someone clicking a link — to a fake login page, a malicious download, or a compromised website. DNS filtering stops the vast majority of those clicks from ever doing harm.

First, what is DNS?

Every time you visit a website, your device asks a DNS (Domain Name System) server to translate the human-friendly address — like microsoft.com — into the numerical IP address computers actually use. DNS is the phone book of the internet: it happens silently, thousands of times a day, on every device.

So what is DNS filtering?

DNS filtering sits in the middle of that lookup. Before your device is allowed to connect to a site, the request is checked against a constantly-updated list of known-bad domains. If the destination is a phishing page, a malware host or a category you’ve chosen to block, the connection is refused — the page simply never loads.

In plain English

It’s a bouncer on the door of the internet. Every website request is checked against a threat list, and dangerous or unwanted sites are turned away before they reach your staff or your devices.

Why it’s so effective

What DNS filtering is not

It’s a layer, not a silver bullet. DNS filtering won’t replace endpoint protection, email security or staff training — it works alongside them. Think of good security as a series of nets: DNS filtering catches an enormous amount before anything else has to, but the other layers matter too.

The bottom line

DNS filtering is one of the highest-value security controls a small business can add: cheap, invisible to users, and hugely effective at stopping the everyday attacks that actually hit UK businesses. If it isn’t part of your setup, it should be.
