Cyber security for small businesses: where to actually start

Cyber criminals don’t skip you because you’re small — they target you because you’re likely to be less protected. The good news: a handful of well-chosen foundations stop the overwhelming majority of attacks. Here’s where to start, in the order that gives you the most protection for the least effort.

Why small businesses are targets

Most attacks aren’t personal. They’re automated, scanning the internet for weak passwords, unpatched software and people who’ll click a convincing email. SMEs are attractive precisely because attackers assume the basics aren’t in place.

The foundations, in priority order

1. Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) everywhere. It’s the single biggest reduction in account-takeover risk you can make, and it’s usually free.
2. Patch everything, automatically. The flaws attackers exploit are almost always ones a vendor already fixed — businesses just hadn’t applied the update.
3. Back up your data, and test the restore. Ransomware is survivable if you can recover. A backup you’ve never restored from is a guess, not a safety net.
4. Protect your endpoints. Modern EDR (endpoint detection & response) goes far beyond traditional antivirus, spotting suspicious behaviour and isolating threats.
5. Train your people. The vast majority of breaches start with a human clicking something. Short, regular training plus realistic phishing simulations turns your team into a defence layer.

Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed scheme that covers five core controls. Working towards it is one of the best ways to know your basics are genuinely in place — and it’s increasingly required to win contracts and qualify for cyber insurance.

Think in layers, not silver bullets

There’s no single product that makes you secure. Real protection comes from layers — identity, email, endpoint, network and people — working together and monitored continuously. If one layer is bypassed, the next one catches it.
